Knoxville — A bird not usually seen in Tennessee was recently treated at the University of Tennessee veterinary school.

The golden eagle was hurt when it fell out of its nest. It was first examined in Wyoming, then ended up in Knoxville when it developed a fungal infection.

“It seems to be doing well, and we hope it continues to do well,” said Dr. Michael Jones of the UT vet school.

Jones said the vet school has a special facility for treating birds.

“The program is called Avian and Zoological Medicine. In that program we teach students how to diagnose and treat animals such as birds of prey, and large and small exotic animals.”

The last nesting pair of golden eagles reported in Tennessee was in 1996.
