Knoxville — The transition team from the University of Tennessee and the Battelle Memorial Institute continues its work in assuming the management of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

A UT physics professor involved in the transition said the preparatory work has continued for more than a year.

“We’re now on-site after a year of writing the proposal and planning for this,” said Dr. Lee Riedinger. “We’re surveying the many programs in the laboratory. It’s an exciting time for us.”

Riedinger said his group has held many meetings with ORNL personnel.

“It’s part of how we come to learn the details of what the laboratory is about. The first two meetings we had were excellent.”

Work also continues on the Spallation Neutron Source, a joint project by ORNL and the U.S. Department of Energy. The cost of SNS is estimated to be $1.36 billion.
