KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee Community Partnership Center and Black Cultural Programming Committee are hosting a series of events in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Stories from the Civil Rights Movement: A Martin Luther King Holiday Celebration Honoring Elders of the Civil Rights Movement” is scheduled for 4 p.m., Jan. 16, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 2714 Brooks Road.

The event is part of a community oral history project sponsored by UT, the Corporation for National Service, and Mount Zion Baptist Church.

The program includes narratives from the Rev. R.E. James, Mount Zion pastor emeritus, and church member Annette Johnson, a photography exhibit, and a video re-enactment of the 1955 Montgomery, Ala., bus boycott.

The MLK 2000 celebration, “Cherishing the Dream, Continuing the Legacy,” is set for 1 p.m., Jan. 17, in the University Center Auditorium. The event, sponsored by the Black Cultural Programming Committee, will include performances by the Love United Gospel Choir, the Kuumba Watoto Dancers; and the Vine Middle School Choir; a skit by the UT student group F.O.C.U.S.; and a tribute to King by Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

Also included in the committee’s celebration is special guest Bryan Barrows, a storyteller who will perform a piece titled “Who was Martin Luther King Jr.?”

A reception will follow the program. All events are free and open to the public.
