Knoxville — Many of the rituals and activities during the holiday season revolve around eating.

But the head of UT’s exercise science department says there are some easy ways to avoid gaining extra weight.

“A person should anticipate big meals at parties, and adjust their intake during the day leading up to them,” said Dr. Edward Howley.

“When eating, choose smaller portions. Enjoy the richness of the food, but be a little more cautious,” Howley said.

Walking is another good way to burn off some of the calories from holiday dinners and snacks.
