Knoxville — Tennessee’s burley tobacco markets opened in Greeneville Monday, with mixed prices for the crop.
“Most growers were happy,” said Richard Ensley, a senior research assistant with the UT Agricultural Experiment Station in Greeneville. “Companies bought the majority of the tobacco, paying basically the same prices they paid last year for it.”
Prices for dried tobacco were between $188 and $205 per hundred-pound bales.
In 1998, $232 million worth of tobacco was sold in Tennessee.
