Knoxville — The federal government will soon release new proposals for increasing workplace safety.

The new rules are designed to prevent repetitive-motion injuries like carpal-tunnel syndrome.

Dr. Susan Smith, coordinator of the graduate safety studies program in UT-Knoxville’s College of Human Ecology, says the government is trying to protect the health of office-workers.

The agriculture, construction and maritime industries would be exempt from the new regulations.
