KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A University of Tennessee faculty couple has won a grant to educate college and university teachers to recent developments in bioethics.
Dr. James Nelson, a professor in the UT philosophy department, and Hilde Nelson, the director of the department’s Center for Applied and Professional Ethics, will receive an $85,000 award from the National Endowment for the Humanities to conduct a seminar entitled “Bioethics in Particular.”
About 15 participants selected from around the country will receive a stipend to attend the five-week seminar at UT next summer. They will meet three times a week and research and develop papers on topics such as aging, new reproductive technologies, and death and dying.
“This seminar is designed to bring the professors up to date on developments in bioethics over the last decade,” James Nelson said.
The NEH mission funds summer seminars for teachers from smaller colleges and university who do not have access to the libraries and other resources of a large research university.
