KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges has recognized Dr. Sharon Patton as its 1999 teacher of the year.

Patton, professor of comparative medicine in the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, received the Norden Award, sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health, which recognizes teaching excellence in veterinary schools.

“I do really love teaching and the association with vet students,” she said. “That is the reward I get every time I teach.”

Patton, named a UT Distinguished Service Professor earlier this year, is vice president of the American Society of Parasitologists. She is scheduled to become president in two years.

One of Patton’s master’s degree students, Amy Farley, was honored by the American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists for presenting the best paper by a graduate student. Her paper was on heartworms in cats.
