MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A new award for overall quality was presented to four Tennessee newspapers at the state press association meeting here Saturday.

Chester County Independent in Henderson, The Review Appeal, Franklin, The Daily News Journal in Murfreesboro, and Nashville’s daily paper, The Tennessean, received Sweepstakes Awards at the Tennessee Press Association meeting.

Contest awards are given in four circulation categories, two for non-daily publications and two for dailies. For the Sweepstakes honor, six points are given for a first-place win, and five for second to one for sixth.

Chester County Independent, in the non-daily, under 5,200 paid circulation group, won three first place awards and had a point total of 42. Its top honors were in sports, public service and best news photograph.

Franklin’s Review Appeal took the Sweepstakes Award in the non-daily, 5,200 and above circulation, with four first places and 43 points. First place winners were best single feature, best section or issue, local features and promotion of newspapers.

The Daily News Journal, under 25,000 circulation, took three firsts–best personal column, general excellence and sports–and totaled 51 points.

The Tennessean had five firsts–best news photo, best single editorial, general excellence, promotion of newspapers and sports. Its Sweepstakes point total was 66.

Winners of three first-place awards were:
The Standard Banner, Jefferson City, best feature photo, public service and sports; The Knoxville News-Sentinel, best news story, public service and Sunday editions; The Daily Times, Maryville, best sports photo, community lifestyles, make-up and appearance; The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, best single feature, editorials and local features; The Millington Star, best single advertisement, local features and make-up and appearance.

The following papers had two first-place wins:
Ashland City Times, best news story and general excellence; Cleveland Daily Banner, best single editorial and editorials; Dyersburg News-Dyer County Tennessean, community lifestyles and make-up and appearance; State Gazette, Dyersburg, best news story and best single feature; The Jackson Sun, best feature photo and best special section or issue.

Winners of one first place award include:
The Bristol Herald Courier-Bristol Virginia-Tennessean, make-up and appearance; The States-Graphic, Brownsville, best single feature; Chattanooga Free Press, community lifestyles; The Chattanooga Times, best personal column; The Courier-News, Clinton, best personal column.

Cookeville Herald-Citizen, best single advertisement; The Herald-News, Dayton, editorials; The News-Examiner, Gallatin, best single editorial; The Greeneville Sun, public service; The Roane County News, Kingston, best sports photo; Overton County News, Livingston, best personal column.

Southern Standard, McMinnville, best news story; The Courier, Savannah, general excellence; The Mountain Press, Sevierville, local features; The Rutherford Courier, Smyrna, editorials; Fayette County Review, Somerville, best single editorial.

A total of 1,129 entries were submitted by 87 of 132 TPA-member newspapers. Members of the Texas Newspaper Association judged the entries.
