Four Candidates For UT Presidency (220)

A University of Tennessee trustees’ committee Saturday selected four candidates to interview for the presidency of UT.

The candidates, who will interview in Knoxville starting Monday, are:

Dr. George Emert, president of Utah State University; Dr. James Walker, president of Middle Tennessee State University; Dr. Marvalene Hughes, president of California State University, Stanislaus; and Dr. J. Wade Gilley, president of Marshall University.

The search committee plans to meet at 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 5, in the trustees meeting room, 800 Andy Holt Tower, to vote on a candidate to recommend to the trustees, Beauchamp Brogan, UT general counsel, said.

The full board will consider the committee’s recommendation at a 9 a.m., May 7, meeting in the board room, Brogan said.

“We have assured no one that they have this job,” Bill Sansom, who chairs the search committee, said. “It all depends on what they do (in interviews) next week.”

The candidates will meet with the search committee, a search advisory committee of students, faculty, staff and alumni, the president’s staff, and members of the university community.

Emert begins interviews Monday morning, May 3, and Walker starts at noon Monday. Hughes’ sessions begin Tuesday at 8 a.m., with Gilley starting at noon Tuesday.

UT President Joe Johnson announced last summer that he plans to retire June 30.
