Guido H. Stempel, professor emeritus of journalism at Ohio University and former editor of Journalism Quarterly, will speak April 16 at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville-s Annual Communications Research Symposium.

Stempel-s talk on “Are Opinion Polls Right?” is set for 12:30 p.m. in the University Center Shiloh Room. The talk is free and open to the public.

Stempel has written, edited and contributed to several communications books and periodicals and more than 150 published articles. He was editor of Journalism Quarterly, a major mass communications research magazine, for 17 years and is co-editor of the Web Journal of Mass Communications Research.

He has worked with Scripps Howard News Service to conduct 11 national public opinion surveys on current topics since 1992. Articles on his work have appeared in more than 100 newspapers, and his survey data are part of the University of Connecticut-s Roper Center survey repository.

Stempel received the 1997 Professor of the Year Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and the 1989 Outstanding Service Award of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
