A Florida educator, Dr. Robert Leiter, has been named dean of outreach and continuing education at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

UT-Knoxville Provost John G. Peters said Thursday the appointment is effective May 1. Leiter currently is dean of outreach at Florida International University.

“Dean Leiter has a national reputation for dynamic leadership,” Peters said. “He has developed programs related to distance education, community programs and outreach at the University of Alabama, Mississippi State University and Florida International.

“We look forward to his involvement in those areas in our division of continuing studies and distance education.”

Leiter earned degrees in education, guidance and counseling from Ashland University, Edinboro University and the University of Cincinnati, where he received the doctoral degree in 1983.

He has held several leadership positions in the National University Continuing Education Association and the Association for Continuing Higher Education.
