KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Several hundred visitors to the Tom Elam Press Box got their first look at high definition television Saturday during the Tennessee-Florida game.

George L. Davis, assistant director of the University of Tennessee Center for Telecommunications and Video, said Sony Electronics Corp. demonstrated the new technology. Sony recorded the game and will give a copy to UT.

“The image was so clear it was like looking at the game through a window,” Davis said. “When the camera was panned back, you could see about 40 yards of the field.”

The camera was set up on the fourth level of the press box, and the image was transmitted via closed circuit to a display unit in a lobby area on the same level, Davis said.

Michael Berger, CTV’s senior design technician, was UT’s technical liaison to Sony. Cynthia Edmonds, CTV audio visual production specialist, operated the camera.

High definition television will not be available for consumers in the United States until after the turn of the century, Davis said.
