KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — With the dedication of the McCarty Auditorium Sept. 16 at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, the UT School of Architecture recognizes one of the largest gifts of its 21st Century Campaign.
Renovation of the auditorium was made possible by a gift to the school by the local architectural firm of McCarty Holsaple McCarty and the McCarty family.
The public program will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Art and Architecture Building on Volunteer Boulevard. Laurens Tullock, president of the Cornerstone Foundation, will give a lecture, “Knoxville: One Identity.”
Marleen Kay Davis, dean of the school, said the McCarty gift will be appreciated every day by hundreds of students.
“By setting a standard for high quality design in our every day environment, the McCarty Auditorium will enhance the learning experiences of our students,” Davis said.
The renovation work was by Christopolous and Kennedy Construction. The new facility is representative of the McCarty family’s many ties to UT, the School of Architecture and the Art and Architecture Building.
Elizabeth McCarty is a 1946 and 1965 graduate of UT. Her husband, Bruce, was among the Tennessee architects instrumental in establishing the School of Architecture.
Bruce’s son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Jane, were 1973 and 1977 graduates, respectively, of the school. Elizabeth’s and Bruce’s son, Hayes, and daughter, Sarah, also are UT graduates.
The McCarty architectural firm won the design competition for the Art and Architecture Building in 1977. Bruce and Doug McCarty were co-designers for the project, completed in 1981.
