Technology Fee Funds UT-Knoxville Improvements (140)

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Students with personal computers in residence halls at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville this fall will find all rooms have Internet access for the first time.

Faye Muly, of the campus Office of Information Infrastructure, said access was available last year but not in all rooms.

”Now we can provide that access to any student in any residence hall room,” said Muly, attributing the improvement to the two-year-old student technology fee.

In the past two years, the technology fee has allowed $5.6 million in new computer purchases and computing infrastructure improvements at UT-Knoxville, she said.

Elsewhere on campus, department and open computer laboratories have been added or updated.

”More than 1,000 new computers have been made available to students, and upgrades for 24 more computing laboratories are scheduled in the coming months.”

Another $5 million in computing-related improvements are planned during 1998-99, Muly said.
