KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Dr. C. Glennon Rowell has been named dean of the College of Education at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
Rowell, who came to UT in 1980, has served as interim dean since July 1996, when Dr. Richard Wisniewski returned to the faculty.
Dr. John Peters, vice chancellor for academic affairs, announced the appointment Tuesday. He said that Rowell received broad support from the faculty, students and K-12 school educators.
“Glennon Rowell is highly respected for his work with the various constituencies of the college,” Peters said.
Rowell came to UT-Knoxville from Florida State University where he earned the bachelor’s degree. He was associate dean for instructional programs and later assumed responsibilities for the college’s graduate studies and administrative services.
He holds master’s and doctoral degrees from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville.
Peters said Rowell’s research in language arts and the teaching of reading has contributed to the development of an instructional model for preparing elementary school teachers.
