KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Interviews are being scheduled for a guidebook about the churches and cemeteries in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and neighboring communities.
Dr. Gail Palmer, an instructor in the University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s College of Communications, is conducting interviews and researching materials for a book to be published in 2000.
“I hope to help provide a record of the people, their lives and the role of the churches in fashioning their lives and in helping mold this region,” Palmer said.
The book’s title will be “Gone But Not Forgotten: A Guidebook to the Churches and Cemeteries of the Great Smoky Mountains.”
Palmer said the guidebook would be organized in “day tours” that people can take to visit churches and cemeteries established in the region during the 1700s and 1800s.
Among the communities Palmer wants to include in the book are Cades Cove, Greenbriar, Gatlinburg, Townsend, Wear’s Valley, Cosby, Sevierville and Newport; and in North Carolina: Cataloochee, Cherokee, Bryson City, Fontana, Murphy, Maggie Valley and Waynesville.
