KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Dr. Donald J. Dessart, a University of Tennessee-Knoxville professor, has earned an alumni achievement award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dessart, a faculty member in the College of Education here for more than 35 years, was selected to receive one of four 1998 alumni achievement awards from his alma mater.
UT-Knoxville Chancellor Bill Snyder said the award is a tribute to Dessart’s work.
“The quality of education throughout the state has benefited from Don Dessart’s research and innovative teaching methods,” Snyder said.
Dessart has served as director of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, president of the Tennessee Mathematics Teacher’s Association, and chair of the editorial board for the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education. He has also authored many books, book chapters and articles.
After graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the school of education at Wisconsin in 1950, Dessart completes the master’s degree in education and mathematics, also at Wisconsin, and then earned the doctoral degree in mathematics education at the University of Maryland-College Park.
The award will be formally presented to Dessart in Madison on May 9.
