KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– The safety of air bags in automobiles will be the topic of a Nov. 3 program in the University of Tennessee College of Law Speaker Series.
The student organized program, which is open to the public, will include plaintiff and defense attorneys, a research engineer, and a demonstration of air bag deployment.
Presenters will be Sidney Gilreath of Gilreath and Associates, Knoxville; Robert Campbell, senior partner in Hodges, Doughty and Carson, Knoxville; and Stefan Duma, a research engineer with the Automobile Safety Laboratory at the University of Virginia.
“Auto manufacturers have failed to adequately test air bags for below average size people, and this has resulted in severe and catastrophic injuries during minor collisions,” Gilreath said.
Campbell said air bags can prevent death and serious injury, although not in all vehicle accidents.
“Contrary to what governmental regulatory agencies have led the public to believe, air bags are not a panacea,” Campbell said. “They will not prevent injury in every vehicle accident.”
