KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Special event parking controls will be in effect at University of Tennessee lots for Boomsday.

Mary Lynn Holloway, UT-Knoxville’s administrator of Parking Services, said Thursday the controls will provide additional safety and convenience for those attending the 10th annual riverfront festival and fireworks show Sept. 1.

“UT Police and our parking staff will help the public in getting to and from the event and assist with traffic control around our parking lots,” Holloway said. “The Knoxville Police Department and Fire Marshal’s office suggested that we implement our special events parking controls for safety reasons.

“To cover the expense of providing this service, we will charge for parking in our lots.”

Parking for Boomsday will be $5, the same rate that will be charged in most city- and county-owned garages downtown.

Events will begin at noon on the waterfront, and UT lots will be staffed from 9 a.m. until traffic has cleared the area after the fireworks show, which begins at 9 p.m.

Officials say up to 250,000 people may attend Boomsday this year.
