UT Graduate Earns Fulbright Award (170)

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Anita Karne, a May graduate of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, is one of 20 students studying in Britain this fall on Fulbright graduate student awards.

Dr. Tom Broadhead, director of UT’s Honors Programs, said approximately 700 students from colleges and universities in the United States applied for the British Fulbright awards.

Karne, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Narsaiah Karne of Farragut, earned her bachelor’s degree in biology. She plans to study physiology at Oxford University’s Christ Church College.

Karne said UT-Knoxville’s interdisciplinary College Scholars Program allowed her to develop in consultation with faculty her own course of study that emphasized biochemistry and physiology.

“I appreciated the faculty in every department for being so open with suggestions and guidance,” Karne said. “I enjoyed it and I would pick UT all over again.”

After a year at Oxford, Karne plans to enroll at Yale University, where she already has been admitted to medical school.

She attended Bluegrass Elementary School and graduated from Farragut High School.
