KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Dr. Karen Sowers-Hoag has been named dean of the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, a UT official said Thursday.

 Sowers-Hoag, director of the School of Social Work at Florida International University in North Miami, will join the UT staff Aug. 9, Dr. John G. Peters, vice chancellor for academic affairs, said.

 She succeeds Dr. Eunice Shatz who retired last year.

 “We interviewed several excellent candidates,” Peters said. “Dr. Sowers-Hoag emerged as the individual best suited to lead to our statewide social work program into the 21st century. The college’s faculty and I look forward to her move to Tennessee.”

 In addition to the Knoxville location, the College of Social Work has branches in Nashville and Memphis.

Sowers-Hoag earned the bachelor’s in sociology at the University of Central Florida and completed both master’s and doctoral degrees in social work at Florida State University. Her research has focused on the evaluation of social work practice.

 She joined the Florida International faculty in 1986, and was named head of the school in 1994.
