New Director For “Pride of the Southland” (195)

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Dr. Gary D. Sousa, director of bands at Sam Houston State University in Texas, has been appointed professor of music and director of bands at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

UT-Knoxville Vice Chancellor John Peters said Sousa’s position includes responsibility for the “Pride of the Southland” marching band.

The appointment, effective July 1, ends a year-long search by a committee representing faculty, students, and band alumni, Peters said.

“I am delighted with the musical experience, integrity, and high level of enthusiasm that Dr. Sousa brings to UT-Knoxville band program,” Peters said.

Dr. Dolly Davis, acting head of the UT-Knoxville music department, said Sousa has a reputation as one of nation’s most gifted wind instrument conductors.

“That background will be a magnet to attract students interested in instrumental music training,” Davis said.

Sousa received his undergraduate education at the University of Rhode Island and earned his masters and Ph.D. at Ohio State University in music education and conducting.

For four years Sousa was associate director of bands at Baylor University before moving to Sam Houston State University in 1988.

Sousa taught public school music prior to his work at the university level and he has extensive experience as a guest conductor and clinician, Peters said.
