KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Recommendations of a national commission on teaching and America’s future will be the topic of the Goodrich Lecture May 14 at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
Dr. Ted Sanders, president of Southern Illinois University, will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the University Center Shiloh Room. His speech will be “What Matters Most: Teaching For America’s Future.”
Sanders, a former acting U.S. Secretary of Education, served on a commission that looked at teaching and its relationship to the nation’s future.
The Billie Grace Goodrich Distinguished Lecture is open to the public. Now in its third year, the lecture series was established with a gift from UT alumnus Henry Goodrich and named for his wife, also a UT graduate.
Henry Goodrich, a longtime member of the UT Development Council, is former chairman and chief executive officer of Inland Container in Indianapolis, Ind., and is retired chairman of Sonat Corp. of Birmingham, Ala.
Goodrich said he established the lecture series as a way to make a contribution to the intellectual life of UT, provide the public with new and provocative ideas and stimulate thought about possible solutions to U.S. educational problems.
