KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A University of Tennessee-Knoxville physics professor is helping schools in Tennessee and across the nation use the Internet.
Dr. Michael Guidry is chief technical consultant for Tech Corps, a non-profit group that drafts volunteers to help grades K-12 use the Internet and the World Wide Web.
Tech Corps, formed in 1995, is one of 12 groups whose web page is to be recognized April 27-29 at the President’s National Summit on Volunteerism, Guidry said. The group’s web address is http://www.ustc.org.
“This recognition is giving Tech Corps visibility which we hope will translate into more volunteers,” Guidry said. “Visits to our web site are up at least 50 percent in the last week because of our web page being selected to the summit.”
Guidry oversees the Tech Corps web site and is the corps’ top technical adviser. He is helping the group conduct a national summer institute at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts on school Internet usage.
In Tennessee, Guidry and Brigham Thomas of Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Engineering Technology Division are coordinating formation of a state chapter of Tech Corps.
They seek to organize a state-wide task force, recruit volunteers, land financial and corporate support, and select school districts for a pilot program by this fall, he said.
Guidry designs web-based curricula for astronomy courses he teaches at UT-Knoxville. He has developed a “Violence in the Cosmos” web site on the explosive processes in the evolution of the universe.
