KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — U.S. Senator Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., will speak at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville spring commencement exercises.

 The ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, May 16, in the Thompson-Boling Assembly Center and Arena.

 Thompson was elected United States Senator from Tennessee in 1994. He is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and this year was elected chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee.

 Thompson grew up in Lawrenceburg, Tenn. He received his undergraduate degree in philosophy from Memphis State University in 1964 and his law degree from Vanderbilt University in 1967.
