KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Two University of Tennessee-Knoxville honor students were recognized Thursday in a USA Today tribute to the nation’s top students.
Anita Karne of Farragut and Mary Anne Peine of Sevierville, both UT Whittle Scholars and seniors in UT-Knoxville’s College of Arts and Sciences, were among 124 students named.
“We are very honored to have these two young women selected for recognition by USA Today,” Dr. Linda Maxson, UT-Knoxville associate vice chancellor and dean of undergraduate academic affairs, said. “They are representative of some of the many excellent students we have at the University of Tennessee.”
Karne is studying biology and biochemistry at UT, with a focus on neurophysiology. She has received a National Science Foundation scholarship and has done research work in Britain.
Karne started a WUOT-FM radio program of contemporary Indian music and is regional student coordinator for Amnesty International.
Peine studies environmental issues and is co-founder of Students Promoting Environmental Action in Knoxville (SPEAK), a UT student environmental organization.
She has studied rainforest ecology in Latin America and presented a paper on Women, Politics and the Environment at a 1994 conference in Moscow.
“Anita and Mary Anne are recognized as outstanding students, not just for their classroom academic ability,” Dr. Thomas Broadhead, director of University Honors, said.
“They are involved in extra-curricular activities, community service and leadership activities that fit their personal and professional interests together so well.”
