KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Dr. Charles O. Jackson, 61, University of Tennessee-Knoxville history professor and former associate dean of liberal arts, died Wednesday at UT Medical Center.

Jackson, a Knoxville resident, came to UT-Knoxville in 1969 from Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga.

Jackson was appointed assistant dean of the College of Liberal Arts (now Arts and Sciences) in 1972 and associate dean in 1979. He recently resigned as associate dean, but continued to teach in the history department.

Jackson earned the bachelor’s degree in history from Oglethorpe University. At Emory University Jackson earned master’s and doctoral degrees, also in history. Special interests included American social and cultural history.

Jackson is survived by his wife, Emma, and two daughters, Tracy Deanna Smith and Holly Denise Jackson. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
