KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– Five academic departments at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville have received funds from Exxon’s educational grant program.

The $23,000 will support special programs and equipment purchases. Truman Bell, Exxon college relations coordinator, said the gifts are part of $1.6 million the company is providing to 90 colleges and universities.

UT-Knoxville’s College of Engineering received $19,500 — with $8,000 going to chemical engineering, $7,500 to mechanical and aerospace engineering, $3,000 to civil engineering and $1,000 to electrical and computer engineering.

The Department of Geological Sciences got a $3,500 grant.

Bell said Exxon makes grants to schools which offer degrees in educational fields from which the company recruits future employees.
