KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Shirley Underwood, an assistant superintendent of Knox County schools, has received the national Excellence in Education Award.

It was presented by the University Council for Educational Administration and the University of Tennessee College of Education.

Underwood was one of 23 school administrators across the nation chosen for the inaugural award which recognizes administrators who have made significant contributions to improving educational leadership and who have exemplary records of helping prepare people for school administration.

She will be recognized at the Knox County school board’s July 3 meeting.
