KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– The College of Education at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville has won accreditation under new, performance-oriented standards.
Dean Richard Wisniewski said UT-Knoxville is one of 54 education colleges to receive initial or continuing accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. NCATE is the only national accrediting body for schools, departments and colleges of education.
“NCATE accreditation standards emphasize teacher performance,” Wisniewski said. “They focus on what teacher candidates should know and be able to do.”
The new standards include state licensing principles for teacher preparation, he said.
Teachers, policy makers, education specialists and teacher educators review program offerings and make an on-site visit to each university seeking NCATE accreditation.
“Our college’s rigorous internship program, its strong working relationships with the College of Arts and Sciences and the exceptionally close working relationships with 14 school systems are recognized as being among the strongest in the nation,” Wisniewski said.
“We are proud of our students and their accomplishments.”
Approximately 500 colleges have NCATE approval. UT-Knoxville has been continuously accredited since 1954.
