KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Nine University of Tennessee-Knoxville students were awarded Scripps-Howard scholarships at the UT College of Communications Honors Banquet Thursday.
The scholarships are named for Scripps-Howard reporters, managers and advertisement executives.
The Ernie Pyle News-Editorial Student of the Year award went to Catheryne Pully of Greenback, Tenn. Pyle was a Scripps-Howard World War II correspondent who died in the line of duty in the Pacific theater.
The Josephine Chambers Scholarship was awarded to Thomas G. McCown of Knoxville.
Melissa D. Hanson of Knoxville received the Myron G. Chambers Scholarship.
The Knoxville News-Sentinel Advertising Scholarship went to Jill Buckler of Seymour and Jason Eberl of Murfreesboro. Kimberly R. Johnson of Seymour was awarded the Tom Siler Scholarship.
Johnny R. Royster of Etowah was given the Escar Thompson Memorial Award.
Knoxville News-Sentinel Journalism Scholarships went to Jason M. Reynolds of Ooltewah and Michele Steiner of Brownsville, Tenn.
Other top professional achievement honors and awards in the fields of advertising, broadcasting, journalism and public relations were given.
