KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s World Wide Web home page has been ranked in the top 5 percent of all sites on the Internet by a New York-based communications firm.

Point Communications evaluates and ranks the web pages around the world and has given its highest honor to UT-Knoxville.

The firm also put UT-Knoxville’s home page in its top 10 college and university sites. Also in the top 10 are Yale, Penn State, Johns Hopkins and the University of Edinburgh.

Web pages, or home pages, are informational programs about businesses, universities, institutions and individuals available on the Internet. In addition to text, most have graphic images or “photos” and some include audio and video.

The survey rates and reviews only the best of the thousands of web sites, Todd Whitney of Point Communications said. “We provide (Internet) surfers with a standard of excellence — a catalog of the most lively, useful and fun sites on the ‘Net.”

Bill Rosener, who is in UT-Knoxville’s Office of the Vice Chancellor for Information Infrastructure, maintains the UT page at [http://www.utk.edu].
