KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Directors of the Fred M. Roddy Foundation Inc. awarded 125 scholarships to some of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s brightest students at a campus luncheon Friday.
Scott Warden, a junior in biochemistry with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, accepted the awards on behalf of all recipients.
Students receiving the scholarship must have a grade-point average of 3.74 or higher.
The foundation, headquartered in Attleboro, Mass., was established by Blount County native and UT alumnus Fred M. Roddy. Since 1970, approximately 4,000 Roddy Scholars have received more than $3 million in scholarships.
Roddy, a 1927 UT-Knoxville engineering graduate, established the scholarships with a $500,000 bequest in 1969.
Roddy invented and developed equipment for handling plastics and in 1939 founded the Cumberland Engineering Co. in Kingsport. He moved the firm to Rhode Island in 1940.
Shawn Buckless, a foundation officer, attended the luncheon. Other foundation members attending were: Deirdre Martin, Shawn Buckless, Richard B. LaFleur, and Bill and Audie Jennings.
