Noted Environmental Writer To Speak At UT

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.– A former Philadelphia Enquirer journalist who five times won the nation’s top award for environmental reporting will speak Sept. 18 at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Jim Detjen will give the Alfred and Julia Hill lecture at 8 p.m. in the Shiloh Room of the University Center. His topic will be the future of environmental news.

Detjen has won the Edward Meeman Award five times and has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize eight times. He has won 45 state and national awards for investigative reporting in 21 years as an environmental and science reporter in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Louisville, Ky., and Philadelphia.

Detjen is now a journalism professor at Michigan State University. He is co-founder of the Society of Environmental Journalists and the International Federation of Environmental Journalists.

The Hill lecture, held annually in honor of the founders of Oak Ridge’s first newspaper, is free and open to the public.
