MARTIN, Tenn. — A record 5,812 students enrolled this fall at the University of Tennessee-Martin, 112 more than UTM’s previous high in 1983, officials announced Tuesday.

Chancellor Margaret Perry said UTM’s enrollment increased in every major category — beginning freshmen, returning students, undergraduate transfers, graduate students and high-achievers.

“It’s a combination of a lot of effort we’ve put into enrollment management the last eight years,” Perry said.

“The reputation of the university tends to follow the reputation of the students who’ve been there,” she said.

“We’ve had a very intensive recruitment process to get the students who match UT-Martin into UT-Martin. When you do that, you get a student who’s motivated and wants to be there. Match that with a good faculty and it culminated this year in these increases.”

The return of 3,979 students from the spring semester is an indication that more students are persisting toward graduation, Perry said.
