KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Dr. Wilma A. Dunaway, who earned her doctoral degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1994, received the dissertation of the year award from the American Sociological Association.
Dunaway, now an assistant professor of sociology at Colorado State University, won the award at the association’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
The topic of her work is “The Incorporation of Southern Appalachia Into the Capitalist Economy, 1700-1860.” Dr. John Gaventa directed her doctoral studies.
The ASA inaugurated the award in 1989 to honor the best Ph.D. dissertation submitted by advisors and mentors in the discipline of sociology.
