KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The first female will assume command of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s ROTC corps of cadets this fall.

Gwyn A. Ayer, a senior French major from Tucson, Ariz., officially will take command at a 4 p.m., Sept. 7, ceremony in the University Center auditorium.

Chancellor Bill Snyder formally will appoint her and other 1995-96 ROTC cadet leaders, said Lt. Col. David Jones, professor of military science at tactics at UT-Knoxville.

Ayer, whose father, Francis H. Ayer, is a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, will be responsible for training the battalion of 230 cadets.
