KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A South Carolina educator will become the dean of nursing at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Oct. 1.

Dr. Joan L. Creasia, interim dean at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, was appointed Tuesday by Dr. John Peters, vice chancellor for academic affairs. She replaces Dean Joan Uhl who resigned in June.

“The College of Nursing will benefit from Dr. Creasia’s broad experience in nursing practice and academic instruction, and we look forward to her arrival in Knoxville,” Peters said.

Creasia was an instructor at UT-Knoxville from 1974-78 while earning the master’s degree in medical surgical nursing. Her undergraduate degree is from the University of Vermont and her doctorate from the University of Maryland at Baltimore.

Creasia taught nursing at Frederick Community College in Maryland and Maryland-Baltimore before moving to South Carolina in 1994.

Her academic and professional specialties are nursing practice, patient outcomes and nursing management.

She is married to Dr. Donald Creasia, a research toxicologist.
