KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A Chicago community organizer, Darryl Burrows, will discuss community partnerships with East Tennesseans July 17.
Burrows’ visit, designed to help citizens plan community projects, is sponsored by the University of Tennessee-Knoxville’s Community Partnership Center. Burrows will speak at 11:30 a.m., Monday, in the Green Room at Ramsey’s Cafeteria. The meeting is free and open to the public.
“One of our goals this summer is a series of conversations with community-based organizations in the area,” said Fran Ansley, co-director of the center. “We want to hear ideas from people in the area about helpful things our center might do, and build partnerships based on fairness and mutual respect.”
Burrows, head of the Citizens Information Service of Illinois, co-chairs the Policy Research Action Group, a research consortium of Chicago universities and community activists. The group is a model for many U.S. collaborative community research projects, said Ansley, UT associate professor of law.
UT’s Community Partnership Center, established last year, was awarded $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help low-income neighborhoods and communities in Knoxville.
