KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Three University of Tennessee-Knoxville students were presented 1992 General Motors Volunteer Spirit Awards Wednesday.
They are seniors Robbie D. Jones of Burlington, N.C., and Caroline J. Stophel of Bristol, Tenn., and junior John Worden of Knoxville.
The awards go annually to UT-Knoxville students who are active volunteers in student or university activities or in the community. Each winner receives a plaque and five shares of GM common stock.
Jones, an architecture major, gave campus tours as a Vol Corps member last year, was part of the 1992 Senior Gift Challenge working group and chaired the recycling effort of the Tennessee Annual Architecture Spring Thing.
Jones’ research on UT’s historical architecture and landscaping is being used in the campus master planning effort. Work he did on Estabrook Hall’s history led to UT studies of other buildings and has helped set the plan for Estabrook’s renovation. His work with Vol Corps resulted in the development of the campus tour handbook.
Stophel, a social studies major, has been an active volunteer since high school. She is president of Gamma Sigma Sigma, a national service sorority at UT, and has worked with the March of Dimes, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Knoxville, the Florence Crittenton Agency and the American Red Cross.
Worden, an economics major, has been active in Boy Scouts, the All Campus Events committee and the Student Government Association. He was a Student Orientation Assistant and worked with the Senior Gift Challenge.
He is a founding member of the Volunteer Civitan Club, the Student Athletic Council and the Undergraduate Visitation Committee. He has worked with the Campus Chest campaign and with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Knoxville.
