KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — John Worden of Knoxville was one of three University of Tennessee-Knoxville students presented 1992 General Motors Volunteer Spirit Awards Wednesday.

The awards go annually to students who are active volunteers in a UT-Knoxville student group, the student body, the university or the community.

Worden, an economics major, is the son of Stuart and Betsy Worden, 1924 Braden Oak Court, and has been active in Boy Scouts, UT’s All Campus Events committee and the Student Government Association.

He was a student orientation assistant and worked with the Senior Gift Challenge. He is a founding member of the Volunteer Civitan Club. He founded and was president of the Student Athletic Council, a group whose purpose is to increase student support of campus athletic programs.

Worden also founded the Undergraduate Visitation Committee under the SGA to look at campus dormitory visitation policies. He headed the student arm of the Campus Chest fund raising campaign and has helped with events at the Knoxville Boys Club.

The other award winners are seniors Robbie D. Jones of Burlington, N.C., and Caroline J. Stophel of Bristol, Tenn.

Each student received a plaque and five shares of GM common stock.
